According to a recent blog post by the Times, the number of people seeking a prescription pill for their weight loss is on a steady rise. Doctors and health care providers are said to be struggling to cope with the figures, and health centres are increasingly being left unable to offer comprehensive advice for each and every patient.

In fact, figures would appear to indicate that 1.5 million prescriptions were processed for weight loss drugs last year alone. This is a massive 13% rise on 2008 and even more worrying 66% rise on 2005.

Although it is arguable that the rise is a result of more people looking for non surgical solutions for weight loss, the sheer number of prescriptions is posing a real burden for the NHS, costing them on average, £47 million every year. This averages at £32 per prescription.

Natural alternatives

The weight that is being placed on the NHS resources, not to mention its funding is a growing concern and will surely take precedence away from other serious conditions. On top of this there is a growing misconception that prescription weight loss drugs are the only options available. This simply isn’t the case and there are a number of natural, herbal alternatives that have been shown to help people with weight loss, without side effects.

We published a piece last month about how natural weight loss pills are proving popular for those looking to shift the pounds in time for holiday but the fact remains that people are largely still unaware of the potential benefits of weight loss drugs, provided they maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Balance is vital

It’s vital to consider that weight loss pills are not adequate substitutes for healthy, balanced diets and that they aren’t quick fox solutions. They are however, potentially beneficial supplements for anybody struggling with their weight.
