These days, it is a commonly accepted fact that for any house , building or any concrete structure to be built properly, it must have an exceptionally strong and durable foundation, as well as a strong structural base that will effectively support the entire structure. This is exactly what makes pilling, as well as Sheet pilling, so important and valuable.
WHAT IS IT?
Pilling is a technique which is commonly used by building contractors to set a deep and strong foundation for structures such as houses or buildings. By driving and embedding piles of steel, concrete and wood into the deep layers of the ground soil, the contractors are capable of providing a strong and durable support to the structure at the lowest foundation level. This is basically the most important pre-requisite for any construction project.
Factors such as the capacity, the scope and the size of the project, as well as the condition of the soil right beneath the ground, and the space needed for rigging should be all taken carefully into consideration before starting the pilling process. A deep foundation, as opposed to a shallow foundation, is used to efficiently transfer the load of the entire structure to the stronger, deeper layers of the soil, which have a much higher bearing capacity and can safely take the load, thus ensuring a strong support for the structure.
The most commonly used materials for pilling include concrete, steel and wood, and, as an extension, vertical columns of wood, precast concrete piles, timber piles, steel sheet piles and so on.
Piles made out of these materials can be driven or drilled into the ground, in order to make a solid foundation for the load of the structure. Structural engineers, Geotechnical engineers, Area contractors, as well as foremen and Site fitters are all supposed to play their individual roles, when it comes to planning, designing, understanding and, if necessary, streamlining all the important tasks that are included into the pilling, the digging and the construction of a solid and strong structure.
All kinds of variations and forms of pilling techniques are utilized by nearly all Consulting engineers, Housing Developers and major Contractors, when handling the constructions and the establishment of large Housing Development projects, Marine projects, Retail and Road construction projects, Commercial projects and so on.
These different variations of pilling techniques can be differentiated usually based on the choice of the material which is used or the adopted technique or method. Some of these can include the following:
These are also known as Cast-in-drilled-hole piles. They utilize extensive boring techniques in order to be drilled into hard and solid earth.
These piles are made by using various sizes of tubular hollow sections for the anchors or pile shaft. They are also known as helical anchors or screw anchors.
The technique behind driven piles is based on using a Pile Driver, which is a machine used to drive prefabricated piles directly into the ground. The majority of Piling Contractors use driven piles made from steel, concrete or wood. The driving technique is also known to lead to soil displacement.
